MELBOURNE, Jan 19 AAP - David Hookes was a major part of Australian cricket for close
to three decades, as a player, coach and one of the great characters of the game.

True to his style as a person, he arrived with a bang and smashed five Sheffield Shield
centuries in six innings for South Australia in 1976-77 - just his second season at first-class
level.

Despite Australia's great standing in the Test arena in the mid-1970s, the 21-year-old
