NSW: Almost 7,000 charged with holiday speeding

New South Wales police have charged almost 7,000 of the state's drivers with speeding
in the first three days of Operation Safe Arrival.

The double demerit points campaign which began at midnight last Thursday has failed
to deter drivers from speeding.

Some 6,801 drivers have been charged in the past three days.

Traffic Services Commander Chief Superintendent RON SORRENSON says speeding is one
of the four fatal causes of carnage on NSW roads this year.

The Christmas-New Year road toll stands at 11, compared to two at the same time last year.

Police have charged 381 people with exceeding the .05 drink driving limit.

In one incident, police stopped a woman travelling with two unrestrained children at
Umina on the NSW Central Coast.

She returned a blood alcohol reading of .230, almost five times the legal limit.
