Kovach and Rosenstiel -- Traveling Curriculum Series at National Press Club -- How to Be Accurate in the Age of 24-Hour News

News Advisory:

What:

The Committee of Concerned Journalists is pleased to resume itsTraveling Curriculum Series at the National Press Club. Bill Kovach, chairman of CCJ, and Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Project forExcellence in Journalism, will facilitate the next session, How toBe Accurate in the Age of 24-Hour News.

The proliferation of news outlets has led to competition foraudiences across mediums -- broadcast, online and print. Journalistsare finding themselves under increasing pressure to get the storyout and get it out fast. But there is sometimes a great dividebetween getting the news fast and getting it right. Using largegroup discussions, small group exercises and real life examples thisworkshop examines what most journalists agree is the most vitaldiscipline of the profession: verification.

For over four years, the Committee of Concerned Journalists hasbeen engaged in a national discussion with reporters, editors, producers, publishers, owners and academicians about the directionof the news business. The Traveling Curriculum is our latest meansof continuing this discussion with the entire journalism community -- from the largest metropolitan newspaper to the smallest local TVnewsroom to those journalists courting a global audience on theInternet.

Thanks to a partnership with the National Press Club, theCommittee has been able to offer a series of capsule sessions eachfocusing on a different aspect of the elements of journalism. Theseone-and-a-half-hour workshops deal with a variety of journalism'sbroader concerns and principles with an emphasis on pragmatism.Drawing on actual cases studies, the workshops are designed to shareeffective tools and techniques to maintain these values in face ofthe multiple pressures of a Washington newsroom. These NationalPress Club sessions allow journalists, editors and reporters fromdifferent news organizations and different media to share theirthoughts, concerns and ideas with one another.
